Cool, we all have heard about SEO, most say it’s dead, some swear by it, personally, I feel why not?
Give Google what they want, you will benefit after all. Why fight or ignore the Tsunami for what it is.
If we do a few things right, and understand the fundamentals, SEO is actually easy. Joost de Valk and his team created this beautiful tool to make SEO easy Yoast SEO for WordPress. The free version is awesome, but if you like it buy it. Support them as they are doing great work.
We (SnappSales) use it on all our and our clients’ websites and landing pages.
Here is the absolutely essential beginner’s guide on how to use the Yoast WordPress SEO.
The full guide by Yoast himself – read it here.
You install it like any other WordPress plugin by navigating to Plugins >> Add New >> Search Yoast SEO >> Install the one by Team Yoast.
On your Left Side navigation look for SEO and Navigate to General Tab. Next run the Easy to Follow Configuration Wizard, you only have to do this once.
This is really important, so put some shoulder in, and complete this as much as you can. This is like the foundation of your building, do it right!
Now to start optimising your web pages and blogs for SEO. We head over to Posts tab in the left hand Navigation and head over to the blog we want to optimise.
As soon as you open this blog post or page, you will see this window. This is where the magic happens.
Step 1: SEO Keywords
Ask yourself, what are the keywords I want to use in this blog or page to be found by Google?
Remember: SEO is about Keywords and relevant, quality user friendly content and other people confirming your work, in a very short summary.
In this example, our blog post title is “4 Ways to Align Your Marketing and Sales Departments” and the Keywords I want us to rank for are “Align Sales and Marketing Departments”.
After typing your keywords, update/publish your page for the changes to take effect. When you have a look now, you will find an Analysis tab, and according to colour rating, suggestions on what to improve to get your SEO as great as possible.
Step 2: Optimise your SEO Meta Data
Fancy for: Tell Google in a very Search Friendly format what the page is all about.
Click on Edit snippet button
SEO Title: Keep your Keywords in-mind, write a compelling SEO title that contains your focus keywords. Titles are very important, this is the cover your book will be judged on.
Slug: It will also be a great idea to ensure the slug (Fancy word for page name) contains the keywords and is the same, all smalls and divided by little hyphens.
Lesson: Stop Words, words that stop google completing the “read” of the rest of the title. Don’t use them in your slugs. Avoid short function words such as “The, is, at, which, on”
Meta Description: This is some real estate that gives a brief description of the page and the content. Keep it relevant to your content and keep it friendly, you are talking to humans 1st, then robots 2nd . When the text in the Textbox turns red, you are over the limit, REDUCE TEXT.
Tip: Include a Call-to-Action in your description. Something like, a read more, or learn more. You can even do something like, Call Us Today.
Once you are happy with your efforts, update your page again.
Step 3: Social SEO
When your page is optimised for social, it is 1st great for SEO, and 2nd makes your post or page very shareable on most social platforms. I do hope you are sharing your posts on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn?
Here you have the Facebook meta. You can use the same data as the previous tab, or you can create different content.
Upload an Image that will draw attention, and that relates somewhat to your content or expected readers. Remember to update your page when you make changes!
Caveat: The Premium version gives you more social options, which is quite handy.
Step 4: Content Updates
When you look at the analytics, you will have a ton of suggestions on where and how to improve your on-page SEO. I really recommend updating your content accordingly; you will see the results later.
Content Tip: When you update you content, remember Google also recognise words associated with your Keywords. Example, Keyword: Mario Bros. We can “confirm” our keyword and rand on word like, Nintendo, Luigi and Mario. Use Synonyms to describe your services or product, use it in the content a lot.
It is always advised to have your keywords as a header in your content as well.
There is always a discussion over amount of words you should use and the amount of times you should use your keywords. I prefer to do 450 words or longer, and about keyword stuffing, don’t do it. You are writing for humans, not robots, if your keywords and their synonyms are natural language, it’s good to use it. Don’t overdo it!
Step 5: Image Optimisation
This is a great way to score points on your SEO score cards. Go to each and every image on your page, click one on it once, a new box will popup, click the pencil, or edit button. Create a caption and Alt Text, and be sure to use your Keywords. Update Your Page!
That is it my friends. On-Page SEO done like a Pro. This will be enough to satisfy Google and in return, you will get great natural organic rank. I agree there is much more to it, and I guarantee loads more to do, but this is a great start.
You understand that when you create great content, you should tell the world about it. The world will not come unless you send them a personal invite. Share, Share, Share.
Share your content everywhere, that will drive traffic, and traffic should convert to leads.
